When to use this mode

Use the File mode when you already have a document that captures a process but isn’t structured the way you need it — for example:
  • An existing SOP written in Word that you want to reformat as a Steppd document
  • A PDF spec or procedure guide you want to break down into steps
  • A plain-text runbook or checklist you want to organize into sections
The AI reads the file content and restructures it into a proper document hierarchy of sections, steps, and sub-steps. You review a draft outline and answer clarifying questions before the document is created.

Steps

1

Go to the new document page

In the sidebar, click My documents, then click New document. Or click New document directly from the Dashboard.
2

Select the Document card

On the mode-selection screen, click the Document card.
3

Fill in optional metadata

Optionally enter a Title, Version, and Department. If you leave the title blank, the AI will infer one from the file content — you can edit it in the editor later.
4

Upload your file

Click the upload area and select your PDF, DOCX, or TXT file. The accepted formats and size limit are shown beneath the upload area.
5

Click Generate draft

Click Generate draft. Steppd reads the file and uses the AI to identify and structure the content. A status message is shown while it processes.
6

Review the draft outline and answer questions

A draft outline appears with the proposed sections and steps, along with clarifying questions. Answer as many questions as you can to help the AI produce a more accurate and complete document.
7

Create the document

Click Create document. The editor opens with the restructured content, ready for you to review and refine.
The AI restructures your content — it does not reproduce it verbatim. Review the generated document in the editor and make any adjustments needed.
