Every Steppd document uses a three-level hierarchy to organize content.
Section
  └── Step
        └── Sub-step
Keep sections for major phases or topics, steps for individual actions within a section, and sub-steps for additional detail within a step.

Adding nodes

Add a section (top level) Click + Add section at the top of the left sidebar. A new section appears at the bottom of the tree, auto-selected and ready to name. Add a step Hover over a section in the left sidebar — a + icon appears. Click it and choose Add step. The new step is added inside that section and selected immediately. Add a sub-step Hover over a step in the left sidebar — click the + icon and choose Add sub-step. The sub-step is created inside that step. In all cases, the new node is auto-selected so you can start typing its title straight away.

Writing content

1

Select a node

Click any section, step, or sub-step in the left sidebar.
2

Name the node

The node’s title field appears at the top of the main area. Click it and type a name.
3

Write the body

Click inside the rich-text editor below the title and start typing. Use the toolbar to apply bold, italic, lists, headings, and images.

Renaming nodes

Select the node in the left sidebar. The title field at the top of the main area becomes active. Edit the text, then click away or press Tab. The title saves automatically.

Reordering nodes

Drag any node in the left sidebar and drop it above or below another node at the same level. You cannot drag a step onto a section, or a section onto a step — only same-level reordering is supported. The new order is saved immediately.

Promoting and demoting nodes

Promoting (outdenting) moves a node up one level in the hierarchy. Demoting (indenting) moves it down one level.
OperationEffect
Promote a stepStep becomes a section, inserted after its current parent section.
Promote a sub-stepSub-step becomes a step, inserted after its current parent step.
Demote a sectionSection becomes a step inside the section immediately above it.
Demote a stepStep becomes a sub-step inside the step immediately above it.
To promote or demote a node, hover over it in the left sidebar to reveal the context controls, then click the promote (↑) or demote (↓) arrow.
A section cannot be demoted if any of its child steps have sub-steps. Doing so would create a four-level hierarchy, which is not supported. Remove the sub-steps first, then demote.

Deleting nodes

Hover over a node in the left sidebar and click the trash icon. A confirmation prompt appears warning you that the node and all its children will be permanently deleted. Click OK to confirm.
If you created your document from a video, thumbnail frames appear beside relevant steps in the main editor. These are visual hints extracted from the video at the timestamps associated with each step — they help you verify the AI-generated content. Frame hints are not included in exports or the published view.
