The document editor opens at /sops/:id/edit whenever you create a new document or open an existing draft. It is the single place where you write content, structure your document, and take action on it.

Editor layout

The editor is divided into three areas.
AreaPurpose
Top barDocument title (editable inline), save status indicator, status badge, and action buttons — Publish, Embed, Export, and Archive.
Left sidebarDocument tree showing the full hierarchy of sections, steps, and sub-steps. Also contains the Document outline toggle and the + Add section shortcut.
Main areaThe selected node’s title field and rich-text content editor.

Auto-save

You do not need to save manually. Steppd saves your changes automatically as you type. The top bar shows Saving… while a save is in progress, then Saved once it completes.
Click Document outline at the top of the left sidebar to see a read-only overview of your entire document — title, version, department, and all sections, steps, and sub-steps — without scrolling through the main editor.

Top bar actions

The buttons available in the top bar change depending on your document’s status. When the document is a draft:
  • Publish — publishes the draft and redirects you to the read-only published view.
When the document is published:
  • Embed — opens the embed dialog so you can create or copy a public share link.
  • Export — opens the export dialog to download the document as a Word file.
  • Archive — archives the document and removes it from your active documents list.
Click the back arrow (←) at the left of the top bar to return to My documents at any time. Any unsaved content is flushed automatically before you leave.
