Getting to the new document page
You can start a new document from two places:- Dashboard — click New document in the top area of the home screen.
- My documents — click New document in the sidebar or at the top of the documents list.
Choose a creation mode
Blank
Start from scratch. You write everything — no AI generation. Best when you already know the structure you want.
Notes
Paste rough text, bullet points, or an unstructured process description and let AI shape it into sections and steps.
Audio
Upload a spoken walkthrough or meeting recording (MP3, WAV, OGG, M4A — max 25 MB). AI transcribes and structures the content.
Video
Upload a screen recording or process walkthrough (MP4, MOV, WEBM — max 2 GB). AI extracts frames and structures your process.
Document
Import an existing PDF, Word document, or text file (PDF, DOCX, TXT — max 20 MB). AI reads and restructures the content.
Metadata fields
Every creation mode shows the same three metadata fields before you generate or create:| Field | Required | Description |

| Title | Required for Blank; optional for all AI modes | The document name. For AI modes, leave it blank and Steppd will infer one from your content. |
| Version | Optional | A version label for this document, such as 1.0 or 2024-Q3. |
| Department | Optional | Assign the document to a department. Departments are managed in Settings → Organization. |
Creating a blank document
Select the Blank card to open a plain editor with no AI assistance.Enter a title
Type a title in the Title field. This is required — the Create Document button stays disabled until you provide one.
